The Oral Iron Spray I've Been Using

A bit TMI, but iron supplements make me constipated. Sorry, but it's true and has been a lifelong issue.
From being automatically given iron tablets during pregnancy through to the menopause, iron supplements have always had this effect on me.
I've tried increasing naturally occurring iron in my diet through red meat, spinach and other foods, but there's only so much you can eat without taking the joy out of food altogether.
I've also tried:
- Liquid iron supplements mixed with orange juice
- Bullet-style tablets divided into smaller doses throughout the day
- Various attempts at spreading the dose out
Unfortunately, none of those solutions worked for me.
This oral iron spray was my last hope of boosting my low-ish (but still technically "normal") iron levels. I originally started using it to see whether it would help with my restless legs.
To my surprise, it actually helped.
More importantly, I didn't experience the constipation that I get with traditional iron supplements.
The Downsides
No product is perfect.
For me, the key to avoiding constipation is not swallowing it. I spray it inside my cheek, leave it in my mouth for at least 30 seconds, and then rinse it away.
You don't have to rinse it away, but that's what works best for me.
I have also noticed a small amount of tooth staining over time, although nothing significant. My whitening toothpaste usually deals with it, and if needed my dentist can easily remove any staining.
The flavour is pomegranate. I assume that's there to make the experience a little more pleasant!
How I Use It
- Four sprays for the full dose
- Spray onto the inside of the cheek
- Move it around the mouth and tongue for at least 30 seconds
- Rinse away afterwards (my preference)
Final Thoughts
This is one of the few iron supplements I've found that I can tolerate comfortably. Everyone is different, of course, but if iron tablets don't agree with you, it may be worth a look.
If you're interested in trying it, have a look at the current price. It can vary quite a bit over time, so it's worth checking before buying.
If you are concerned about your iron levels, please speak to your GP or another healthcare professional.
As with any medication or supplement, always read the packaging and enclosed leaflet before use.
